19. Make your home smell like the holidays

Scents can take us back to the past. When you get a whiff of cinnamon you may think of your grandma's cinnamon rolls. These nostalgic ties aren't just a coincidence -- there's actually science behind why we cherish these aromas. Having a festive scent hit you as soon as you walk in a room can be so relaxing and invigorating. So why not make your own potpourri? Potpourris are also a great way to decorate a table and they deodorize any room instantly. Have some leftovers? Give them as gifts! Just put it in a mason jar or cellophane gift bag, tie it with a ribbon, add a printable gift tag, and you've got a gorgeous, thoughtful gift.

Here's what you can put in your potpourri. You decide how much you want to add. There is no right or wrong.

  1. Dried apple slices
  2. Dried orange slices
  3. Nuts with shell
  4. Cinnamon sticks
  5. Whole cloves
  6. Juniper berries
  7. Dried rose hips
  8. Bay leaves

  10. Essential oils: cedar wood, clove, orange and pine are all great together (optional)
  11. Mason jar

Remember, you don't need exact measurements for this recipe. It's really just about layering each of the ingredients until you get to the top. You can start with the orange slices, then add a few pieces of the nuts with shells, then the cinnamon sticks, cloves and so forth. The essential oils are also optional since the dried fruits and spices are quite fragrant on its own.

Music is good for the soul. So true isn't it? Music can be so much fun but healing and uplifting at the same time. You don't need to just play Christmas songs; after all you hear them everywhere which can drive you a little crazy at times. Create your own playlist to get you in the festive spirit.

21. Get some Vitamin D

Depending where you live it's sometimes a challenge to get the natural vitamin D that your body needs. Despite the ability to get vitamin D from food and the sun, an estimated 40%-75% of people are deficient. The amount of vitamin D you need depends on many factors such as; age, race, latitude, season, sun exposure, clothing and more. Recommendations from the US Institute of Medicine suggest that an average daily intake of 400ñ800 IU, or 10ñ20 micrograms, is adequate for 97.5% of individuals.

Take some time to reflect on everything big and small that happened throughout the year, and practice gratefulness. With a little regular self-care during the holidays more joy and health will come your way. The more time you take to care of yourself the more you can joyfully give to others during this special time of year. By next year, self-care will become a habit and not something you have to purposefully think about. Cheers from Pure Fiji!
